American photojournalist Holly Pickett was a staff photographer at The Spokesman-Review newspaper in Spokane, Washington, before moving to Cairo, Egypt, and later to Istanbul, Turkey, as a freelancer. Holly has covered news and contemporary issues in Afghanistan, Iraq, Gaza, Yemen, Jordan, Oman, Morocco, Lebanon, Turkey, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and all over Egypt. She documented three successive Arab Spring uprisings in 2011—Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya. She is a member of the Everyday Africa and Everyday Middle East photo collectives on Instagram, which use images of daily life to break down regional stereotypes.
Holly was a 2008 Arthur F. Burns Fellow at the Sueddeutsche Zeitung in Munich, Germany. In 2014, she was awarded a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting to pursue a series of stories about the lives of Syrian refugees in Greece, Germany, Sweden, and Russia. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, TIME, Newsweek, The New Yorker, Stern, Elle, Bloomberg Businessweek, NPR.org, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, The (London) Times, The Guardian, Financial Times, Los Angeles Times, The Sunday Telegraph, and many other publications.
