The 'Journeys to School' project, commissioned by Sipa Press and UNESCO, is a photographic investigation about the journeys taken by schoolchildren. Each of the photo essays are testimonies of the conditions concerning access to education and the perception of the contemporary world as experienced by the children. The journey to school is often the first experience of freedom between family and school. It is the playground that builds friendships and opportunities to discover how other people live. In certain cases it turns into an exhausting journey or the focus of political or social tensions. The distance to schools or exposure to violence can become real barriers to education, especially for girls.
